The coalition and partner CBOs boost program engagement by sustaining relationships with youth, offering family services and food, and supporting academic identity and achievement through authentic community ties. Together with BIPOC community based organizations (CBOs), the NE STEAM Coalition organizes listening sessions for youth and families to discuss challenges, frame needs, and advocate for solutions in bringing STEAM opportunities and education to students of color. Topic: STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math) Service Area: Portland, Gresham and beyond The In4All STEM Connect 4/5 program partners a business with a local elementary school to deliver hands-on learning experiences in the classroom that increase interest in STEM-related fields. Serving: Elementary, middle and high school students Girls Build™ offers programming for girls teaching the basics of carpentry, electrical, plumbing, roofing, painting, auto and bike mechanics, sheet metal and more via summer camps (8-15 year olds) and after-school workshops. Youth Design Program is a paid after school program where youth, ages 14-20, learn about design as a tool for racial and social justice. Wayfinders Day Camp for K-8th graders focuses on life science, ecology, community, and cultural history. FIRST LEGO League Challenge is geared towards students grades 4-9 and challenges students to Design, Build, and Program a LEGO Robot to compete in an autonomous table game. Students learn how to think critically while teaming up with professionals to explore a real scientific problem. Topic: STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math)įIRST LEGO League Explorer introduces basic STEM concepts to students grades K-4 by engaging them with LEGOs. Offered free of charge to Oregon schools.īuilding Blocks 2 Success LEGO Robotics Program Design and building professionals are matched with 3rd – 5th grade teachers to provide design education for youth. The Architecture Foundation of Oregon’s Architects in Schools program introduces elementary school students to the power and possibilities of design. When these students are able to travel to Clemson campus, they are given the opportunity to both explore a college subject while participating in social and cultural events on and off campus with other Summer Scholars students.Topic: Architecture, Engineering, Construction and Design Partnerships with international education providers such as Gyeonggi Science High School in South Korea bring global perspectives to specific courses. Summer Scholars students will also meet current Clemson students, who serve as counselors to guide, mentor, and answer questions about life as a Tiger. Participants taking courses stay in a residence hall and eat meals in a dining hall throughout the week to complete their on-campus experience. Evenings feature many of the recreational activities Clemson students enjoy and may include a show at the planetarium, ice cream, games on Bowman field, and an end of the week celebration. Students will engage in hands-on, immersive courses in their field of choice taught by Clemson instructors during the day. Afternoons include free time which can be spent exploring campus, attending a campus tour, or meeting a representative from Admissions or Clemson University Honors College.
